What is CNC machining?

CNC machining is a type of machine used for cutting, marking, drilling, or pressing through a process called Computer Numerical Control or CNC. This process is based on the control of machine or computer assisted tool movements to achieve higher precision machining.

The CNC machining process emerged thanks to specialized software programs that control tool movements through numerical codes related to the coordinate axes of machining machines.

When using a CNC machining machine, orders are programmed by configuring the machine so that the cutting tool operates automatically, eliminating the need for manual operations that can lead to errors in cuts and reduce the risk of accidents.

With CNC machining, complex movements like circles, diagonal lines, three-dimensional figures, and more can be achieved with great precision, identical dimensions, and in large-scale production. This process achieves machining contours and surfaces with a level of precision that cannot be obtained with machines such as lathes or milling machines.

Platinadora Baja is a company with over 20 years of experience in Tijuana, Baja California. We have cutting edge technology to provide our clients with the excellent quality finishes they seek.

In general, the CNC machining process can control other complex machines, such as CNC milling machines, CNC lathes, CNC laser cutting machines, water jet cutting, and electrical discharge machines to complement three-dimensional cuts and finishes.

The basic operation of CNC machining consists of:

  • Activating the CNC system.
  • Programming the software with the tools and machines to be used.
  • Indicating the cutting coordinates based on the model design in a CAD file.
  • Converting the CAD file to a CNC program.
  • Preparing the CNC machinery.

Advantages of CNC machining

CNC machining offers numerous advantages, including:

CNC vs. 3D Printing

3D printing materials and CNC machining services share some characteristics. Both use cutting edge technology to create three dimensional shapes with excellent quality finishes.

However, 3D printing is not yet effectively used for mass production due to its limited speed and accessibility. On the other hand, CNC machining allows for the rapid production of up to a thousand pieces through automated computer-controlled processes.

CNC machining is a subtractive process, starting with a block of material, known as a blank, and cutting the material with rotating tools to shape the piece with high dimensional precision. It is compatible with materials such as wood, plastics, and metals.

On the other hand, 3D printing is an additive process, working layer by layer with materials like resins, plastics, or metallic powders. A laser or similar energy source is used to shape the piece.

CNC machining is a more labor-intensive and complex process compared to 3D printing. It requires trained operators, cutting edge tools, and technology that operates at high speeds with superior tolerance levels to create highly complex geometric pieces.

CNC Machining Processes

As mentioned earlier, CNC machining processes can involve other machines such as:

CNC Milling

CNC milling is a multi-point rotary tool that removes material from the workpiece. A basic milling machine consists of a 3-axis system, where the workpiece remains stationary, and the rotary tool cuts along the axes. On the other hand, a CNC milling machine consists of 4 or even 5 axes, making it a more versatile tool capable of producing highly precise pieces.

CNC Turning

A lathe is a single point cutting tool used to remove material from a rotating workpiece. CNC turning involves two axes that make linear cuts along the surface of the rotating workpiece to remove material around the circumference until the desired diameter is achieved.

CNC Drilling

CNC drilling is a machine used to execute the process of drilling hole patterns in a workpiece with high precision and speed.

Applications of CNC Machining

CNC machining has applications in various areas, including:

In general, industries relying on CNC machining span various sectors, although they don't produce unique products in the market; they are essential for manufacturing furniture, parts, or components.

The precision in machining processes is ideal for manufacturing products of various shapes while preserving the material's properties.
